Marion Davies - January 3rd, 1987 - September 22nd, 1961

Marion Davies, born Marion Cecilea Douras on January 3, 1897, was one of the great comedic actresses of the silent era and into the 30’s. She began as a chorus girl in New York, first in the pony follies and later in the Ziegfield Follies. Her stage name came when she and her family passed the Davies Insurance Building. One of her sisters called out “Davies!!! That shall be my stage name,” and the whole family took on that name. When Marion moved to California, she was already involved with William Randolph Hearst. They lived together at Hearst’s San Simeon castle, a very elaborate mansion, which stands as a California landmark to this day. At San Simeon, they threw very elaborate parties, many of them costume parties. Frequent guests included Carole Lombard, Mary Pickford, Sonja Henie, Dolores del Rio - basically all of top names in Hollywood and other celebrities including the mayor of New York City, President Calvin Coolidge and Charles Lindbergh.

(Is she impersonating Harry Langdon here, or is the pose/hat just a coincidence? Did this happen in The Patsy? I can’t remember!)

Marion Davies and Nils Asther, The Cardboard Lover, 1928
(I’m seeing this described everywhere as Marion Davies, but it looks exactly like Jetta Goudal and matches her costume in the movie. Has anyone seen this? I’ve read that Marion Davies imitates Jetta Goudal’s character at one point in the movie, and having seen her imitate other actors in other films, I can absolutely believe she’s doing a spot-on impression here!)
